How it's calculated
Both heights convert to centimeters, then:
difference = |A − B| · percent taller = difference ÷ shorter × 100 · ratio = taller ÷ shorter

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the percentage difference calculated against the taller or the shorter height?
Against the shorter one -- "taller by X%" means the taller height is X% more than the shorter height, not X% of the taller height. That's the more intuitive reading for "how much more" (the same convention as a price increase), and it means swapping which entry is A and which is B never changes the percentage shown.
What does the "shorters per taller" figure mean?
How many times the shorter height divides into the taller one -- if it reads 1.5x, the taller height is exactly one and a half times the shorter one. At 1.0x the two heights are identical; it only ever equals or exceeds 1.0, since it's always taller ÷ shorter.
Why is the difference in inches sometimes not a clean number?
Because the underlying difference is computed in centimeters first (the site's canonical unit) and then converted to inches at the exact 2.54 cm/in constant -- a clean number in one unit isn't necessarily clean in the other. Two heights that differ by exactly 5 cm, for instance, differ by 1.9685... in, not a round figure.
